 Peak Dehumanisation: From Slime Culture to a Call Back to the Roots

A gallon bottle of white school glue sits on a table in California. Beside it is a small bottle of fluorescent slime activator. Children mix the two, add colours and glitter, knead the resulting goo, stretch it, squeeze it, photograph it, watch other children doing the same thing on screens, and participate in what has become a substantial cultural and commercial phenomenon.


At first sight, there is nothing particularly profound here. Children have always loved messy play.


Yet the scene can also serve as a small window into something much larger.


Fluorescent culture. Plastic culture. Peak Dehumanisation.


Not because slime is particularly dangerous, nor because children should be prevented from enjoying it. The significance lies elsewhere. An elementary human need—the child's desire to touch, manipulate, experiment, create and soothe herself through tactile experience—has increasingly been transformed into an industrial product.


What nature once supplied freely through mud, sand, clay, water, leaves, wood and soil, industrial civilisation increasingly manufactures, packages, markets and sells back to us.


And remarkably, even this seemingly innocent children's pastime leads us directly back to fossil fuels.


From Oil Well to Children's Play


Ordinary white school glue is largely a water-based synthetic polymer adhesive. Polyvinyl acetate and related polymer chemistry ultimately belong to the vast petrochemical material system created during the fossil-fuel age.


Follow the conventional industrial chain backwards and the connection becomes visible:


Slime → polymer glue → vinyl acetate → ethylene and industrial chemical feedstocks → petrochemical industry → oil and natural gas.


Then consider everything surrounding the substance: plastic bottles, fluorescent pigments, packaging, transportation, warehouses, retail stores, online distribution and eventual disposal.


The humble bottle of children's glue therefore illustrates one of the central propositions of Climocalypse:


> Fossil fuels did not merely provide modern civilisation with energy. They created much of its material culture.




Our clothes contain synthetic fibres. Our houses contain plastics, paints, insulation and adhesives. Our food comes wrapped in polymers. Our cars, hospitals, electronics and furniture contain petrochemical materials. Even childhood itself has increasingly acquired a petrochemical dimension.


The fossil-fuel civilisation is therefore far deeper than petrol pumps and power stations.


It surrounds us.


And increasingly, it enters our imagination.


From Mud to Manufactured Goo


There is an irony here.


The attraction children feel towards slime is profoundly natural. Human children evolved through tactile engagement with the physical world. They dug soil, splashed water, shaped mud, climbed trees, handled stones, played with animals and discovered the properties of matter directly.


The need is ancient.


Only the medium has changed.


We have progressively separated children from the natural environment and then created industrial substitutes for experiences that nature once provided.


This suggests a disturbing cultural progression:


Nature

Separation from nature

Artificial stimulation

Overstimulation

Stress and restlessness

Manufactured soothing


The modern child may move from school to organized sport, tuition, television, tablet, gaming, short-form video, social media, ASMR and sensory products—one stimulus following another.


There is less room for one of childhood's historically important experiences:


nothing happening.


Boredom once compelled imagination.


A stick became a sword. A tree became a castle. Stones became armies. Mud became architecture.


When every empty psychological space can instantly be filled by a device, product or organized activity, the child has fewer opportunities to discover what consciousness itself can produce.


This is not principally an indictment of children.


It is an indictment of the world adults have constructed around them.


The Economy of Restlessness


Modern consumer civilisation has discovered something enormously profitable: human restlessness.


First stimulate desire.


Then sell something to satisfy it.


Create another desire.


Sell again.


The economic system depends upon maintaining the distance between what we have and what we think we need.


Digital technology has intensified the process because stimulation no longer needs to wait for the shopping mall. It can reach us every waking minute.


Novelty, notification, entertainment, advertising, outrage, desire and distraction circulate continuously.


Then another industry arises to help us cope with the consequences: wellness products, relaxation apps, sensory toys, sleep technologies, digital detox programmes.


The contradiction is extraordinary.


> We have constructed an extraordinarily stimulating civilisation—and then built industries to help human beings calm themselves inside it.




Slime is harmless enough in isolation. But symbolically it fits beautifully into this strange economy: industrial civilisation manufactures stimulation and simultaneously manufactures soothing.


Peak Dehumanisation


This is what I mean by Peak Dehumanisation.


Not some particular year in which humanity suddenly ceases to be human.


It describes a direction of travel.


Human functions that were once embedded within family, community, nature and the self are progressively outsourced to markets and machines.


We outsource memory to devices.


Navigation to GPS.


Entertainment to algorithms.


Social contact to platforms.


Physical activity to gyms.


Food production to distant industrial systems.


Care increasingly becomes an industry.


Attention becomes a commodity.


And now artificial intelligence is beginning to assume intellectual and creative functions that only recently appeared uniquely human.


Technology can unquestionably liberate human beings. Modern medicine, sanitation, communications, scientific knowledge and countless technologies represent extraordinary achievements. Climocalypse therefore need not advocate technological rejection.


The danger begins when technology ceases to serve human life and human life begins reorganising itself around technology.


Automation without awareness can become another form of ignorance.


The question is therefore no longer simply:


What can technology do?


It is:


What should human beings continue doing for themselves?


Kaliyuga as a Metaphor for Civilisational Restlessness


There is another way of interpreting this predicament.


In the language of Sanatan Dharma, our condition bears many characteristics traditionally associated with Kaliyuga: acceleration, desire, materialism, conflict, confusion, weakening social bonds and loss of discrimination between what is valuable and what is merely attractive.


One need not treat this as a scientifically measurable historical chronology to appreciate its philosophical power.


It describes a civilisation dominated by rajas—movement, ambition, acquisition, stimulation and restless desire—with periodic descent into tamas: exhaustion, numbness, alienation and despair.


Modern consumer civilisation has become extraordinarily capable of satisfying desires.


Yet it has not learned how to stop producing them.


That distinction may prove crucial.


The ecological crisis is partly the physical manifestation of the same psychological process.


Endless desire becomes endless consumption.

Endless consumption requires endless extraction.

Endless extraction requires enormous energy.

Enormous fossil-energy use destabilises the biosphere.


Thus psychology, economics, energy and climate are not separate crises.


They form a system.


This has been one of the deeper arguments running through Climocalypse: climate change cannot ultimately be understood independently of the civilisation that produced it.


The Fossil-Fuel Bargain


For roughly two centuries, humanity has enjoyed access to extraordinary quantities of concentrated ancient energy.


That energy enabled mechanised agriculture, global transportation, industrial manufacturing, megacities, aviation, mass tourism, plastics, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications and the extraordinarily complicated global supply networks upon which billions of people now depend.


But there was a bargain hidden inside this abundance.


Complexity increased.


Dependency increased.


Consumption increased.


Population increased.


Ecological pressure increased.


And the atmospheric consequences accumulated.


The problem therefore extends far beyond replacing petrol cars with electric cars or coal plants with solar panels. Those transitions are important, but the deeper question is:


Can a civilisation constructed around ever-increasing material throughput continue indefinitely on a finite planet?


The answer may require something far more profound than an energy transition.


It may require a cultural transition.


Climocalypse Is Also a Crisis of Meaning


Climate disruption, biodiversity loss, resource pressures, wars, migration, economic instability, technological disruption and social fragmentation are usually studied separately.


But Climocalypse has increasingly led me towards another interpretation.


They are interconnected symptoms of a civilisation that has exceeded limits—ecological limits certainly, but perhaps psychological and spiritual limits as well.


Human beings cannot live permanently at maximum speed.


Nor can ecosystems.


The Global Signals approach consequently becomes more than monitoring temperature, oceans, food, energy, economics and conflict. The combined signals invite another question:


What kind of civilisation is producing these signals?


And after diagnosis comes the more important question:


How should we live in the world that is emerging?


Back to the Roots


My answer is increasingly simple:


Back to the Roots.


This does not mean returning nostalgically to some imaginary golden past.


It does not mean abandoning hospitals, computers, scientific research, electricity or modern communications.


It means practising what might be called selective modernity.


Keep what genuinely enlarges human possibility.


Medicine.


Science.


Knowledge.


Sanitation.


Useful communications.


Appropriate renewable technologies.


Tools that reduce genuine suffering.


But simultaneously recover capacities that industrial abundance has weakened:


local food production; walking; repairing things; practical skills; intergenerational family life; neighbourhood cooperation; community; contact with animals and soil; contemplation; silence; voluntary simplicity; and the ability to experience contentment without continually purchasing something.


We may discover that resilience in an age of Climocalypse looks surprisingly traditional.


Smaller communities.


Food grown nearby.


Reliable local water.


Less material consumption.


Lower energy dependence.


Stronger families.


Mutual assistance.


Manual competence.


Closer contact with the seasons.


And periods of simply doing nothing.


This is not primitivism.


It is redundancy and resilience.


A household that can cook, repair, grow some food, conserve water and function temporarily without complex external systems possesses forms of resilience that a technologically sophisticated but completely dependent household may lack.


The Village Reconsidered


For much of the twentieth century, development meant leaving villages behind.


Perhaps the twenty-first century will force us to reconsider what villages knew.


Not the poverty, caste oppression, inadequate medicine or lack of opportunity that often accompanied traditional village life. Those should not be romanticised.


But villages also possessed characteristics that modern societies may urgently need: proximity to food and water, community interdependence, lower material requirements, repair cultures, intergenerational knowledge and direct relationships with the ecological systems supporting life.


The future resilient community might therefore be neither traditional village nor modern metropolis.


It could combine the best of both:


ancient resilience + modern knowledge.


This may become particularly important if climate extremes, energy stresses, supply-chain interruptions, migration and geopolitical instability increasingly interact.


The objective is not to escape civilisation.


It is to make civilisation more survivable and more human.


From Resilience to Spirituality


Eventually the argument moves beyond economics and ecology.


Civilisational resilience asks:


How much do we actually need to live well?


Spiritual inquiry asks:


How much do we actually need to be whole?


The questions begin to converge.


Advaita takes the inquiry still further.


If fulfilment ultimately cannot be obtained through accumulating external objects, then consumer civilisation is pursuing an impossible objective. There can never be enough products to satisfy a consciousness whose dissatisfaction originates somewhere deeper.


The ecological doctrine of sufficiency and the spiritual doctrine of contentment unexpectedly meet.


Consume less.


Need less.


Fear less.


Compete less.


Be more.


Perhaps humanity's ecological predicament cannot be solved solely through better machines because part of the predicament originates in the consciousness operating the machines.


Rehumanisation


And therefore Peak Dehumanisation need not be the end of the story.


It can provoke its opposite:


Rehumanisation


Put children back in contact with soil.


Let them climb trees.


Let them make things.


Let them become bored.


Let families eat together.


Let grandparents tell stories.


Let communities know their neighbours.


Let technology occasionally become silent.


Let us relearn how to repair instead of discard.


Let us distinguish convenience from necessity.


Let us recover the extraordinary experience of having enough.


And yes—let the children play with slime sometimes.


The point is not to demonise a bottle of glue.


The bottle merely helped reveal the civilisation surrounding it.


A fluorescent blob of polymer on a California table unexpectedly traces a line through petrochemicals, fossil energy, consumerism, social media, childhood overstimulation, ecological overshoot, Climocalypse, Kaliyuga and finally the ancient human search for contentment.


Perhaps that is why something so trivial disturbed me.


It represented, in miniature, how far we have travelled from the elemental world from which Homo sapiens emerged.


The solution is not to turn history backwards.


It is to decide consciously what deserves to travel forward with us.


And so the entire argument can perhaps be distilled into seven words:


> Not back to the past. Back to what is essential.




Preserve what is valuable in civilisation.


Reduce what is unnecessary.


Restore what we have lost.


Prepare for what is coming.


And rediscover what it means simply to be human.
