Why climate change bothers me?

It’s not that the end is scary. Maybe cowards die a 1000 deaths…maybe because of my paranoia…due to being born after 3 miscarriages which my mother had..as if I spent 9 months in a womb tomb where my three unborn siblings had perished before me…my mother’s fears whether this one will survive or not and see the light of day?... surely must have got transmitted to me and gotten ingrained into my dna…..the existential question to be or not to be…as expounded by the great cult hero…my all time legend and hero..the one and only Dr RD Laing…author of “facts of life” where he says that the prenatal 9 months have the greatest influence on our lives…hence my constant preoccupation with endings…death…

The other is my ability to see the future…forecasting the shape of things to come…the future shock…again the other great influence on my life…Alvin Toffler….i use to have this angst in my late teens during the late 60s and early 70s…of last century…which seems to be aeons ago now…about the dehumanisation of humanity…I used to write furiously…sometimes 70 pages a night speeding away high on Dexedrine and grass…the trigger was my sense of being schizoid because my father had dreams that I should sit for the ias exams and become a bureaucrat..not only him but also my uncles…but I had my own dreams…I loved my reading…writing…stoning…thinking…research….i could see clearly that the path humanity was taking was leading us towards dehumanisation…everyone was bent on being someone which would appear great in the eyes of society…bent on becoming richer…more powerful…society was living within layers of cocoons of deceit…false vanity…ego of being someone…anything but themselves…everything was one big lie…

The world being created around was consciously made to reflect those make belief caricatures they imagined they were…hence society designed monsters in spheres…to mimic their vanity…like outlandish cars…dresses…houses…along with all the high energy guzzling lifestyles….neon lights… cars…air conditioning….jet travel…5 star hotels and living….all this was a sure recipe for disaster I could clearly see…but my ideas and thoughts and writings were deemed mad even by my parents…but that did not deter me from pursuing my beliefs…hence I chose research as a calling and means of livelihood…

Society went on its course of aggrandizement remorselessly…corporate structures…economies…went deeper into debt and tried to out vie each other…hyper competition was  rearing its ugly gorgon medusa head…threatening to destroy everything…then came the epic crashes of enron and world com…my cries fell on deaf ears…a voice in the wilderness…

I had no qualms about the end towards which we were hurtling…in fact my anthem from the 70s was…hurtling towards 2001 and beyond….this was going be one more cycle of extinction…there were five earlier…but our problem is that we humans are domesticated family species…the animal kingdom…never had families…hence for them to face extinction was bit easier….already due to our selfish ways…and anthropogenic traits…we are responsible for so many species dying out…so our turn will come one day…either due to the robotic frankensteins we have created which will snuff us out one day in the age of singularity like in 2001 a space odyssey….or the climate which again we have destroyed with our senseless high energy carbon emitting lifestyles….in either case we are doomed…

But what hurts me is the mangled future we are bequeathing to our children and grandchildren….i can see so very clearly the surreal desolate landscape of 2030….2050…2070…my daughter would be 70 by 2050 and my granddaughter 55 by 2070….indeed an extremely sci-cli-fi surreal scenario…which is too frightening to behold…a lump in my throat because we are leaving behind our blood and flesh to face the unreal future….there is no escape… we are deep into the madness…

New Grammar of Life megatrends...ongoing musings...12th may 15

New Grammar of Life Roundup consists of relevant papers, articles from various sources which try to highlight the accelerating telescoping of change based upon events impacting the environment & society which are increasingly surfacing all over the globe. These disturbing trends only reinforce the view that its now or never for us to implement radical NGL solutions which may help in decelerating and finally regress the rate of change of degradation of the environment and climate change and humanity. These disturbing events are selected randomly from web news relating to climate, environment, society, individuals, economies, finance and commercial organisations.

The primary objective is to raise the level of awareness about the rapidly changing scenario in order to create interest in people so that a movement starts which would lead to implementation of solutions which can dampen the rate of change towards any untoward irreversible tragedy impacting mother earth and humanity as we know it.

Sovereign Man - Notes from the Field

April 27, 2015
Cancun, Mexico
“One of the major problems in human nature is our deeply flawed perception of risk. We find comfort in crowds, and even in the face of the most obvious data, we adopt a herd mentality.
Right now, most major governments are insolvent, central banks are borderline insolvent, pension funds are nearly insolvent.
Financial markets are in massive bubbles. Banking systems are highly illiquid and in some cases charging their customers negative interest rates.
And yet, people allow themselves to be convinced that everything is just fine. My neighbor’s not worried, why should I be?

It’s a sign of our times that it takes so much courage to acknowledge reality.”
above is an excerpt from one of the best research newsletters in world. its a voice crying in the wilderness of usa where wall street carries on as if its business as usual. difficult to break nations and people out of the stupor and euphoria of of living in the most developed stage of humankind with technology having transformed our lives beyond recognition. this hold good for for top 5% of the world for whom the good times are always rolling on. for the next 45% its about trying to reach and catch up with the top 5% if not in actuality atleast in some pale imitation where life is in the tv shows. the bottom 50% is so busy trying to eke out a miserable existence of two square meals a day in bustees and shanty towns in leaking rooms where children are peddling drugs. yes indeed it is potpourri of lives as world lurches from crises to crisis and nature's fury is compounding every year with greater extremes of climate. paralysed we wait for godot....

  • since the 50s till recently, us fought so many wars abroad in the name of freedom and against communist regimes like in korea, vietnam, iraq, afghanistan...now there are us commandos known as special operators in as many as 81 countries round the globe training local armies in fighting extremists, terrorists, rebel groups, etc. some of these are involved in proxy wars....this has intensified during the past decade or so...
  • HIV cases have risen in some us rural counties indicating high usage of iv use of heroin and other drugs...a frightening trend of  an affluent society sinking deeper into drugs and alcohol...these trend are actually global since there is quantum increase in youth also in emerging markets resorting to hard drugs...unfortunately alcohol which is the most harmful intoxicant is legal in all places...while a harmless and wonderful herb like ganja or cannabis is illegal....misplaced priorities of a lobby driven world where alcohol is legal and the mafia promoted lethal heroin is clubbed with harmless grass....

  • russia and china want to build 5 nuclear power plants in iran. strange how a small country like iran will have so many nuke power plants...business at the cost of imperiling the planet.
  • fed tells largest us banks that they can buy municipal bonds and can use them for liquidity ratio purposes. again the fed is encouraging banks to invest in risky bonds. the bonds scenario gets scarier.
  • europe awash with -ve yield bonds. even the banking software cannot handle these deals! the realms of impossibility.

drones now to herd cattle, sheep not canines. farmers say that they do not have to feed the drones daily.

how fast we are assimilating drones, robots into our daily lives. suddenly one day we will find we are swamped by machines who can think better than us....towards the age of singularity...

us has upgraded is biggest bunker buster bomb: http://www.wsj.com/articles/pentagon-worked-to-improve-biggest-bunker-buster-bomb-as-iran-talks-unfolded-1428078456?tesla=y. this weapon is being tested is us. the purported reason being striking iran's nuclear facilities some of which are embedded within mountains, in case the nuclear deal fails or is breached.

its global arms race and warmongering doublespeak at its best. ironically us is trying to stop iran from developing nuclear weapons for next 10 years by working towards the nuclear deal along with few other countries. the deal is a flawed one where there is lack of clarity at several points, major one being when iran can restart its nuclear missile development and also the details on checks which us can do. the deal is also making israel paranoid. in several ways its also upsetting the middle east delicate tinderbox balance of internecine violence where already there are so many criss cross conflicting interest battles and skirmishes with the dreaded isis being latest terror on the block.

oil of course is a central theme here which will allow iran to step up production and further aggravate the plummeting oil prices. again there is another angle of capitalism at its best by helping iran develop its nuclear power facilities where several companies are waiting in the wings to make lucre out this. just to recall, if we rewind to early 90s, a similar treaty was signed with north korea, which in a few years was undone with north korea claiming it had the nukes, and the rest is history of horror with kim flexing his fat nuclear muscles every now and then!!! indeed this as complex as global neo post bipolar world war mongering nuke politics can get.

toyota, world's largest car manufacturer, is now planning to set up new plants in china and mexico to cater to growing markets of china and us. these plants will take probably couple of years to set up. then toyota will increase its market shares in these regions. rivals volkswagen, gm and volvo are similarly upping their capacities. since the downturn in 2008, there was a glut in auto market. now again with decline in oil prices, market is promising.

this is indeed a frightening portend, one one hand govts are placing before un plans to reduce co2 emissions by 30% or so by 2025, but on the other hand there is no let up in building up huge capacities in these weapons of mass destruction like alluring SUVs, etc and more gigantic houses with all energy guzzling amenities. humankind is living in a delusional state of double think. the death wish syndrome of humanity is strengthening to fearful proportions.

Obama Administration Submits Plan for Cutting Greenhouse Gases

Part of a major global effort to curb emissions of carbon dioxide; other economies that formally submitted are EU, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland and Russia

The Obama administration formally submitted its plan for cutting greenhouse gases nearly 30% by 2025, part of a global effort this year to curb emissions of carbon dioxide. The move adds pressure on other countries—including Australia, Canada, and India—that haven’t spelled out concrete plans.
The U.S., the second-biggest carbon emitter after China, has taken a leading role in recent months in negotiations with nearly 200 nations to strike an agreement through the United Nations to rein in gases blamed for global warming. “Our target will help spur others to step forward with targets of their own,” said Todd Stern, the U.S. special envoy for climate change.
Republicans used the announcement to amplify criticism of President Barack Obama’s federal emissions rules, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell warning other countries that Congress could stand in the way of promises the White House makes in the negotiations.
Ironically there is opposition from republicans. first this obama plan maybe too little too late. then the GOP want to reduce the targets. its really a grim outlook for 2025-30. at current trends the east coast of us could face devastating snow storms. temp highs are going to be atleast 2 deg c higher. california a desert. suicidal to the core. then we say lubnitz had suicidal drive. actually society has a whole is bent on suicide for the goodies of modern life. lubnitz is a symptom of the broader malaise.

Energy’s New Legal Threat: Earthquake Suits

In key test for industry, Oklahoma homeowner blames quake damages on wastewater wells

After an earthquake toppled her chimney, sending rocks crashing through the roof and onto her legs, Sandra Ladra didn’t blame an act of God. She sued two energy companies, alleging they triggered the 2011 quake by injecting wastewater from drilling deep into the ground.

Ms. Ladra’s lawsuit, now before the Oklahoma Supreme Court, highlights an emerging liability question for energy companies: Can they be forced to pay for damages from earthquakes if the tremors can be linked to oil-and-gas activity?

Oklahoma, with a history of mild-to-moderate seismic activity, experienced 585 earthquakes of 3.0 or greater magnitude last year—big enough to be felt indoors—according to the Oklahoma Geological Survey. That’s more than the state had in the previous 30 years combined and the most of any state in the contiguous U.S.

So far, most of the tremors under investigation in Oklahoma and other oil-producing states, including Arkansas, Kansas, Ohio and Texas, have been too small to cause major damage. But the prospect of facing juries over quake-related claims is reverberating throughout the energy industry, which fears lawsuits and tighter regulations could increase costs and stall drilling.

The mad pursuit for energy is going to leave in its wake earthquakes now and for future generations. We are plundering mother earth. deep into its innards. destabilising the delicate balance of nature and the planet. oh for that last ounce of energy...we can trade our souls and future...

to write or not to write....nothing really matters....

30th mar 15

indeed an existential question . is there any use at all in writing / ranting out these dire predictions / analysis / views / new grammar of living solutions which seem to be falling on deaf ears....like a veritable voice crying in the wilderness... there are already a phalanx of similar and even more succinctly researched material in this regard over the past century which has fallen on deaf ears. in view of this what is the use of continuing NGL.

our nihilistic society is absolutely hell bent upon hurtling on to the point of no return. like zombies they are all to deep into their mindless love for technology advance, cars (of doom), wars here, there and everywhere, exponential growth of energy usage, denuding of forests, bigger, better, faster, richer...insane activities .....which stretch ad nauseum....

actually this is a death wish of our nihilistic society. there is no way we can turn the hands of the clock back.....inexorably we are being sucked into the entails of mordor.... the self destruct genes are embedded deep with each of us...like ying and yang...the basic duality of our existence....the biblical cain and abel story....a primordial genetic dialectical order / process...which like a self prophecy....is on a programmed trajectory....to a doomsday scenario...which like mute spectators we will witness well within the 21st century....maybe we should just learn to enjoy the toys of doom while we are here and now....

An insanely sick society…we are all lubitzes..

this is as surreal it can get. a plane load of passengers hurtling towards certain death in minutes. nothing to do but wail away. say prayers...think of loved ones...death is a certainty for all in its own time...except here...someone has decided by choice to take lives of 149 people with his own.

there have been innumerable incidents where one deranged person takes the life of many. these demented people want to go out in a blaze taking many with them. maybe it gives them a sense of power or maybe they like being together with many at their end to feel that they are not alone. we have indeed reached a surreal inflexion in human mind history.

this can pan out in so many ways....train and bus drivers...policemen going rogue...so far all loved seeing these in movies or reading in books only...but now it’s for real...already in most places these have become recurring themes.......schoolboys,,, psychotics…loners and so on...with guns being so easy to get...mass shootouts like mass hysteria ....terrorists are also in the same category...love for dying with many....surreal ….no it’s a high surreal….magnified...multifold…manifold options of the
the root cause of most of these happening is depression. It is gradually taking a stranglehold over the global population. As society becomes more complex and has greater threshold values for success, etc, many are not able to cope with these insane norms of a society which is run on similar insane principles. These drop outs become depressed. Again depression is very difficult to diagnose. Many of them are intelligent and are able to camouflage their depression well.

but if we truly introspect…at a deeper and fundamental level…we are all murderers…murder need not culminate from the barrel of a gun…or bombs…or a crashing plane…murder can take on so many insidious hues…murder which can kill silently and slowly over time…sometimes taking decades…take the life of its victims…slowly…as deliberately…in that sense we are all lubitzes…and hitlers…all of us are contributing to mass genocide in the most gentle and indirect ways…killing them softly…

if we all analyse all the so called sane and non murderous activities in the world…on the surface most of them seem like human friendly and value creating…innocuous..almost humane..maybe even kind…the milk of human kindness…but the list is indeed endless….and all of us are directly or indirectly involved in these industries / activities (of mass doom and annihilation) …as either perpetrators or victims or both…..by using then…enjoying their benefits….

1.      Food industry: where antibiotics, hormones, steroids are pumped into cattle, poultry; fertilizers, pesticides, hybrid disease resistance genetically modified seeds are uses for cereals, fruit, vegetables; chemicals, lurid colours; cancer inducing foods like GMO cereals, refined sugar and flour, diet foods, hydrogenated oils, processed grain fed meats, microwave popcorn, grilled charred meats, farmed fish.
2.      Carbon emitting entities like ACs, fossil fuel, fridges, cars…
3.      Armaments industry, weapons of mass destruction, guns….
4.      Plastics…
5.      Alcohol, heroin….the former is legally acceptable though it has the most harmful threshold.
6.      Urbanisation…which is energy intensive…
7.      Religions which spread hatred, terror
8.      Modern lifestyles…which are comfort seeking…and again energy, technology, internet intensive…
9.      Healthcare industry which in the name of health is actually exploiting the patients and sucking money out of the system
10.    Capitalism with its insane profit motive which is forever replacing labour by machines..and creating a large under privileged class…
11.    Hyper competition…for survival…excess capacity…giving birth to dying companies, industries….unemployment…
12.    Entertainment industry which insidiously plants the seeds of wanting to become like the celluloid characters…forever reaching out towards a lifestyle which is vapid…meaningless….

So basically all of us subscribe to values, products, lifestyles, aspirations, gadgets, consumer durables, transport systems…the list goes on…which are inherently detrimental to the healthy future of the human race…all of us are mass murderers and rapists…carrying out genocide….killing mother earth…and the future of our children…

Its indeed a very sick society we are part of. Hence in a way depression is perhaps a much more widespread malaise than most of us can ever imagine. It’s like two time bombs are ticking close to each other…human madness and mad society created by humans…both are intertwined…feeding upon each other…a most toxic and malevolent combination indeed….

indeed depression is the new normal....we all love it in so many ways...wallowing in it is the new enjoyment....like zombies we all need our daily fixes of modern societies...wonder toys..gadgets..amazing varieties of food which melts in our mouths.....oral gratification...cars...speed...adrenaline....one large composite drug...how we love watching the murder thrillers...violent games on screens...indeed mass murder instincts are wired within each of us....

True Wealth of Nations – redux

True Wealth of Nations – redux

Why do we all aspire to be rich? Most would say I guess is to be happy. Strange but true the richest nation is US but not the happiest! As per the recent surveys, Panama, Switzerland, Denmark and even Bhutan have been ranked as the happiest nations in different surveys. One can also say, why not transcend happiness and be in a state of satori, or transcend beyond the duality of happiness and sadness into nirvana, but that is another state of being and story.

So far the prime measure of a country’s development has been GDP. As an indicator, it conceals more than it reveals. The world and the countries today are no longer simple economic units which can safely be expressed as a single number. Hence, over time GDP has become an inadequate indicator of a country’s development status. Therefore, there is certainly an imperative need for a multi dimensional composite index which can faithfully and holistically mirror the various facets of the complex economic entities. Time has come to add more dimensions for judging a nation’s wealth and well being.

It is certainly possible for two economies to have the same GDPs, and similar per caput GDPs. This does not mean that these two countries are equally better off. They could have disparate societies where one society may have greater well being among its populace, whereas the other may be rife with inequalities, violence and environmental issues. There could be so many points of divergence which would make it difficult to pronounce which is better, unless there is a systematic comparison of detailed similar attributes with weights assigned after factor analyses. Hence there is an urgent need to evolve a model which can arrive at some integrated index as to which country is better off based upon some objectives of global better-ness emerging from an integrated set of factors.

With a view to arriving at an integrated index to measure the best country in the world, NGL is in the process of designing an integrated composite index. The broad high level indicators of the model are:

  1. Financial
  2. Environmental
  3. Social
  4. Individual
Some of the sub indicators (provisional) under the various broad level high indicators listed above are:

1.      Financial:
a.      Average GDP
a.      GDP standard deviation
b.      Income Gini Index
c.      Unemployment %age
d.      Debt / GDP
e.      Fiscal deficit / GDP

2.      Environmental:
a.      Pollution
b.      Average temperature change
c.      Carbon emissions
d.      Flora decline over past 50 years
e.      Fauna decline over past 50 years
f.       Deforestation over 50 years
g.      Energy usage per head pa
h.      Cars
i.       ACs
j.       Natural disasters

3.      Social
a.      Health – medicine usage
b.      Mental health – reported cases
c.      Allopathic medicine usage per head pa
d.      Lifestyle diseases (BP, sugar) per 100,000.
e.      Murder rate
f.       Rape rate
g.      Prison popn per 100,000.
h.      Literacy rate
i.       Processed food

4.      Individual
a.      Happiness index
b.      Yoga rate
c.      Divorce rate
d.      Joint families
e.      Singles above 30 %age

The above is an outline of a multi parameter weighted rank score model. Over a period of time appropriate weights can be arrived at through factor analysis.

This purports to be only a humble start in creating a holistic True Wealth of Nations model which can capture wealth in all its dimensions. Wealth is not only about money. Wealth is also a summation of peace of mind, happiness, good health, trust, love and so many virtues human beings value. At the end we leave everything behind and go, as we have arrived. Money is important up to a certain extent, but not the be all and end all. When the great Alexander died at the age of 32, he had willed that he should be taken to his last resting place in an open carriage with his hands on either side – empty and facing up – signifying that even the great Alexander left penniless. His soldiers were instructed to shower on the crowds on both sides all his jewels and coins.  Hence the true wealth or health of nations cannot be based upon GDP figures alone. As the Beatles sang “Money can’t buy me love”.

Online junkies…

We are digital junkies…forever touching our magical devices. Our digital addiction is reaching unprecedented levels. Many of us are spending most of our waking hours on our smart phones, tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, high resolution TVs, e-readers, Bluetooth speakers, headphones…forever checking emails, Facebook, tweets, Google, messenger, whatsapp, flipboard, and countless other apps, websites… is it the dawn of the age of singularity?.. even a few hours without wifi..is a deprivation of the vital oxygen which is so essential for our living…adults..children…all have been stricken by the new plague of the net…kids one year old are getting so used to touch devices…they are at home with these intuitive devices…steve jobs is the person who has launched the human race into the cyberspace..

about 100 years ago…we started the electricity addiction…now everything comes to a grinding halt without electricity…similarly the internet grid of which wifi is the last mile link has become so very important …internet is truly the next electricity..like blood with our bodies…water in the world…rivers and seas..yes truly we are children of the internet age…there is no turning back…lest we become pillars of salt like lot’s wife  as they were leaving Sodom….in any case we are going to reduced to robots like pillars of salt…

Slowly, gradually, inexorably we are being sucked into the innards of our digital futures…the obsequious chips are controlling all our movements…even when we are jogging..our iPods are monitoring our calories burnt, speed, distance, heart beat.. now wristbands monitoring all our waking and sleeping hours tracking our health to the minutest details.. every heartbeat..every breath…every morsel…every drop…every turd…next the wonder bands will be transmitting our health stats to our health records in the cloud..to our doctors… maybe robo doctors…like the robo financial advisers of Charles schwab.. In the coming age of singularity so vividly portrayed by kurzweil…micro chips will be embedded into our bodies…our brains will be duplicated..downloaded…into hard drives…cloned..

Millions of surveillance cameras are tracking every move we make…there is a watcher in the skies…big brother is here and now…we are not alone anymore…imperceptibly we are being sucked into the cyber future…morphing slowly into our robot incarnations…mutations..there is no reprieve…we are committed into a surreal cyber soulmind less future…forever detached from last vestiges of all that we knew as humanity…floating digital debris in the infinite cosmos…

Medical longevity vs morphine endings....

There have been amazing advances in medical science during past few hundred years. These improved medicines, surgical techniques, specialty hospital, food and nutrients, health awareness, better living conditions, control of communicable diseases, etc have lead to substantial increases in human life expectancy especially over the past 75 years or so.

As for me, I am living on borrowed time with everyday a bonus. Am 63 today. I have to take 11 pills daily. Feel like medicated goo. Probably without this medication, I would not be here today at my laptop keyboard. During my 20s, I felt living till 50 was all that I wanted. One of the reasons was that both my Father and Grandfather passed away @ 56. Being an existentialist, felt 50 was long enough an existence more so since I had been expanding my consciousness into the cosmos and stretching time to infinity with a little help of mind-blowing herbs and natural crystals.

But with the arrival of my lovely daughter, life became busy all in giving the best one could with our incomes in terms of food, education, clothing and exposure to life. So by the time I had reached 50, she was 20 and in college. Hence the topmost thought was to live till she settled herself in life. The moment she completed her masters and started working, I gave up my job in 2005 which was I not enjoying since 2002. Now that she has a family with an adorable kid, I feel maybe now one can safely depart.

Thanks again to the wonders of modern medical science; my lifespan has extended beyond that of my Father. Being an existentialist and immensely philosophical, however, one has been ready for the exit which is the ultimate fate of mortal sentient beings for past few decades. The average lifespan in the early 1950s was about 40 or so in India. This has now improved to 66. In some advanced counties longevity has reached well above 80. Hence the moral and existential dilemma of when is the right time to leave. One should not overstay like some party goers who hang on after others have left.

Medical science has increased longevity, but at what cost. Long lives are only for the rich who can afford the right food and medicines. Society is bearing the cost of the medical research and facilities ultimately. The pharmaceutical companies are not working increasing lifespan out of any pure altruistic motive. Their major interest is profit, returns on investment and valuations. There is a complex nexus between hospitals, doctors, pharmaceutical industry, regulators, insurance companies and governments. At the cost of ruining all natural balances, the medical fraternity wants us to live forever. Soon they are going to conquer cancer and through DNA engineering humans may be able to live forever! Indeed a most frightening prospect as they will be trampling on each other for want of space!

The basic issues which are arising out of longer life spans are logistical in nature:

Firstly, pressure on the limited resources which mother earth can provide like food, energy fuel, commodities and environment. It is said that now with a population of over 7 bn, the planet is clearly overcrowded and that we need two earths to supply the increasing demands and needs of human kind. In our endeavour to provide food to the teeming billions, science has introduced GMO food which has now been proved to have serious long term health hazards including cancer.

Secondly, we have polluted the planet to stage where it has resulted in extreme climate and irreversible changes in nature. The environment has been impacted most adversely due to higher carbon emissions, energy intensive life global warming, more severe winters, hotter summers, shortage of potable water, drastic reduction in fauna and flora, decline in forest areas, melting of polar ice, rise in sea levels, and increase in incidence of floods, hurricanes and precipitation. The balance of nature has been destroyed by humankind trampling upon forests and killing animals.

Thirdly, hyper competition has reared its medusa-like hydra head. As a direct corollary of too many people and unbridled capitalism, the number of companies producing similar products, fighting for limited consumer mind space is increasing way beyond desired limits resulting in cut throat and unethical competition, wafer thin profit margins or losses, stock market manipulations, credit rater’s over-ratings for accessing debt, discounts, and sales round the year and over capacity.

Fourth, unemployment is increasing in most economies. With longer lifespan, humans need to work for more years because they do not have funds for retirement and old age and they also have the physical ability. Old and young are competing for same jobs. The old are not able to cope with the change over to a digital workspace. Their very jobs are being cannibalized by their children who are not only cheaper to hire, they are more IT savvy and have better qualifications with open minds. Unless the older people continuously reinvent themselves, their survival in the job market is at risk.

Fifth, prolonged life is often possible due to the nexus between the insurance companies, hospitals, doctors, pharmaceutical industry, and high fiscal deficit based old age care which nations can ill afford being deep in debt.

Sixth, pensions all over have become veritable time bombs, since most of the payouts are based upon pre-defined benefits. Most corporations and nations are not funded adequately to meet the pension requirements in the next few decades. Bankruptcies are looming ahead for both the private and public sectors.

Finally, the most practical problem is going to be looking after aged. There would be quantum jump in the need for old age homes, assisted living centres, hospices. As greater proportion of the population becomes physically dependent it will be a nightmare caring for their daily needs like nurses, doctors, especially for those who have alzheimer's, parkinsons with fast fading memories leading vegetable lives, requiring more than $ 20k pa for looking after, Maybe in advanced societies, they will develop robots to look after the aged! the dichotomy between the rich and the poor and similarly affluent societies and poverty stricken ones will become stark. the average ages in the rich parts will be much higher and vice versa. Gradually as we enter the age of Singularity, the robots and computers might decide kill the aged since they will be a drag on the resources!

In view of all the problems arising out of over population and aging societies, there are several solutions for ushering in a balanced steady state which would match the resources offered by mother earth. Solutions might appear bit radical, but are holistic factoring in all the conflicting constraints and work out an answer matching the requirements.

Population control measures may be practiced on a global scale. There are countries which have relatively large natural resources with low populations, while nations which are relatively low in per caput resources generally have large populations. Here there is scope for transfer of people to shrinking population ageing societies like Japan and Europe.  The aspect which is to be maintained across is the ratio of working age population to dependent population, young and old. Here the advanced economies have twin fold needs, one of augmenting highly skilled and qualified people and also labour in some advanced economies like US and Germany. In fact aging economies like Japan have resorted to robots.

Then there is the issue of reducing overall population to a sustainable steady state size from the present 7+ bn to about 5 bn. This indeed is an onerous task. Some of the solutions are:

  1. Strict population control to maximum one child per family across all nations, maybe also zero kids in some,
  2. Economic incentives for adoptions and having no kids,
  3. Emigrations to balance out population and per capita natural resource inequalities,
  4. Cap on life for terminally ill,
  5. Legalizing euthanasia,
  6. Planned euthanasia and assisted end of life including morphine endings (or LSD end of life like Aldous Huxley),
  7. Celebrating death just like birth,
  8. Encouraging living wills stating no hospitalization for prolonging life with support systems, assisted living in hospitals,
  9. Resorts for celebrating endings with loved ones

Some of the above may sound crazy. We need to be united across all countries living in a world with no boundaries or religion. If we want the present human civilization to last out longer, then along with all the other steps for reducing carbon emissions, simpler low energy intensive lives, reducing debt and expenditure (through equally radical measures as listed out above), maybe we can push the inevitable climate collapse and extinction a wee bit further. Some might quip: whether trying do all the above is really worth it?

It would be apt to adopt John Lennon’s “Imagine” as the anthem of our world.

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
